About Us
The State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF), AFSCME Local 2836, is the exclusive representative and bargaining unit for administrative faculty at the Connecticut State Universities and CSCU System Office.
The nearly 800 members who make up SUOAF are part of AFSCME Council 4’s 35,000 members and part of the AFSCME International Union, 1.6 million members strong. We are also part of the AFL-CIO, which represents more than 12 million workers.
Originally established in March 1976 as the State College Organization of Administrative Faculty (SCOAF), representing administrative faculty of four chapters, one at each college campus (Central, Eastern, Southern, Western). The Local Executive Board was formed by election in that same year to represent members across all four chapters/campuses, followed by each campus electing a Chapter Executive Board. In April 1977, we reached our first contractual agreement with the Board of Trustees (BOT) for Connecticut State Colleges.
In 1983, the colleges were granted university status, together constituting the Connecticut State University System, and the union name was changed in 1984 to the State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF). In January 2012, the BOT was replaced by the Board of Regents (BOR) and in 2013, the SUOAF Constitution was amended to add the BOR Chapter for members working at the CSCU System Office.
In 2017, SUOAF-AFSCME celebrated the 40th anniversary of our original collective bargaining agreement.
